Like the graphic novels it is based on, the series is set in a fantasy world that mostly resembles late 20th century Scandinavia. According to director Andy Coyle, the world of Hilda was deliberately designed not to resemble 1 specific real-life location, but rather a vague amalgamation of various countries, mainly Scandinavian, British and North-American, so it can feel simultaneously familiar and foreign. The time period was also deliberately kept vague, but was mostly modelled after the early 1990’s.[1] The series resolves around Hilda, a young blue haired girl who grew up with her mother in a cabin on the edge of the woods near the walled-in city of Trolberg. Over the course of the series, she and her deerfox Twig, later accompanied by an elf named Alfur, move from their cabin to the city, where Hilda befriends two other kids named David and Frida. Together, they go on a number of adventures interacting with and befriending the mysterious animals, people, and spirits that live in and around the city of Trolberg.
Hilda is the titular protagonist of the award-winning British graphic novel series, the British-Canadian Netflix-exclusive television series, and the novelization of the animated series. She, along with her pet deer-fox, Twig, her mother, Johanna, and her friends from the city of Trolberg as well as a little elf named Alfur and its surroundings, embarks in a multitude of supernatural adventures, encountering a diverse cast of magical creatures inspired by Scandinavian folklore.
Hilda is an 11/13-year-old girl whose hair comes in a bright cerulean color, making her stand out from everyone else. Her typical outfit, which she wears both indoors and outdoors, consists of a black beret, a yellow scarf, a red sweater with yellow cuffs, a blue skirt, which is the same cerulean, blue color as her hair, black tights and red wellington boots. She has a Caucasian complexion, like her mother and father. She often has a brown, sling knapsack, in which she carries various items, including her sketch book and a pencil.
When she was younger, Hilda's appearance was largely different. She retained her black beret and tights but wore an oversized brown sweater with a red straight line and yellow zigzag pattern which her mother knitted for her, a red scarf, a yellow backpack, and gray boots. Her hair was shorter and tied into pigtails.
During Season 2, although it's barely noticeable, she is slightly taller than she was in the previous season.
In the epilogue of the movie, she is notably taller than she was in the past two seasons, due to the scene being set at least a year after the events of the movie.
While typically, she still looks all the same and dresses in the same clothes, her skirt is no longer a part of the outfit. Hilda remains this way throughout the third and final season, though she is now noticeably shorter in height compared to her friends Frida and David.
In all incarnations of the franchise, Hilda is an extremely adventurous and fearless girl. She loves to draw in her sketchbook and is very kind to nature. She is shown not to get scared easily by monsters and can outrun and outsmart them.
Hilda is a strong, determined and adventurous girl, she’s also very compassionate and caring, especially towards her family and friends. She is friendly generous and kind, but also has a wild and mischievous side. Hilda loves exploring new places and discovering exciting things, often putting her curiosity above safety. Hilda is quite independent and responsible, dealing with her fair share of challenges and adventures. She is also known for her honesty, (mostly,) courage and bravery and slight rudeness throughout the seasons.
Her rude side is played up more in the graphic novels, where she is known to frequently argue with her mother or to easily get annoyed when things don't go her way. She is also more prone to mischief in the graphic novels (like taking her role of pretending to be injured for first aid practice of the Sparrow Scouts too far or going on secret adventures without her mother knowing). When the graphic novels were adapted for the animated series, these negative traits were toned down in Season 1 to make Hilda a nicer girl. Season 2 partly restores her characterization from the graphic novels, with Hilda getting into some arguments with Johanna there.
In "Chapter 6: The Nightmare Spirit", it is revealed that there is one thing that frightens her; riding a bike, something she never had learned. This was used against her by David's Marra. In the graphic novels, this fear is never brought up, but in the novelization it is turned into a subplot for "Hilda and the Nowhere Space"; early in the book, Hilda comes up with various excuses for not having to use her bike (including that she doesn't want it to get dirty). Then she encounters the Marra who just like in the animated series, uses this fear against her for a nightmare. After this encounter, she tries her best to overcome her fear and slowly succeeds. By the end of the book, she has mastered riding a bike and is thrilled by the thought of all the places she can go to now. As of "Chapter 6: The Old Bells of Trolberg", Hilda can ride a bike just fine and even remarks that she is getting better at it.
Hilda hates having to disappoint people, especially her friends or her mother and always tries her best to help and support others with their needs, occasionally taking risks to fulfill one's request. She is very brave and caring, as described in the official Netflix description. She is usually very happy and generous. Hilda's personality traits are shaped by her experiences and environment, but she maintains her unique curiosity and sense of adventure even as she grows up. Overall Hilda is a well-rounded and interesting character that appeals to both children and adults alike.
Johanna is a main character in the Hilda graphic novels, television series and Hilda Tie-In Series.
She is Hilda's loving and protective mother and the ex-lover of Anders.
Johanna is an adult woman with brown hair and black eyes. She often wears a maroon turtleneck sweater, brown pants and white.
Hilda's mother is caring and supportive, but at times she can worry too much about Hilda not having any "normal" friends her age. Since she lived in Trolberg for a good portion of her childhood, she has a soft spot for the city, and had much less trouble with moving there than Hilda did. However, in "Chapter 8: The Fairy Isle", she admits to Hilda that she does miss the wilderness.
In the graphic novels, she is even more worried about Hilda than in the animated series and is known to get angry at her daughter quite easily, often ending discussions with the words "because I said so!". It is also shown in "Hilda and the Bird Parade" that she doesn't like the city that much, despite having moved there, and doesn't want Hilda to go out by herself. This in contrast to the animated series, where she encourages Hilda to embrace Trolberg.
In "Hilda and the Black Hound"/"Chapter 12: The Nisse", it is revealed that she distrusts Nisse, considering them to be thieves and liars. She seems to have gotten over this, however, by the end of the story (adapted into "Chapter 13: The Black Hound"), at least when it comes to Tontu. In Season 2 of the animated series, she has actually grown fond of him; allowing him to join them for dinner and other family affairs. In return Tontu uses Nowhere Space to help keep the house organized.
Johanna is not shown to be close to anybody else or have any friends. The only people she wants to hang out with are Hilda, Alfur, and Tontu. Hilda even scolds her at one point for this in Chapter 13: The Stone Forest. Her reasoning is unclear, but she seems to be introverted and would avoid socialising with other adults; clearly shown when she was uncomfortable by David's mother, who had taken an interest in her work and shown an interest in getting to know her better.
Trolberg is a walled city with a Scandinavian appearance, appearing in all incarnations of the Hilda-franchise (graphic novels, animated series and tie-in books).
It becomes the primary setting of the story after Hilda and Johanna move here at the end of "Hilda and the Midnight Giant" / "Chapter 2: The Midnight Giant" respectively.
Trolberg started as a small village that grew in population.
In "Chapter 5: The Troll Rock", Principal Magnusson mentions that the school's founder, Edmund Ahlberg, was also one of the great founders of the city. That would mean Trolberg is at most 300 years old. This is further backed up by "Hilda and the Bird Parade", in which a newspaper claims that years Bird Parade is the 256th anniversary. However, in "Chapter 3: The Bird Parade", a flashback about The Great Raven's first visit to Trolberg suggests humans have been living in the area for longer than that. This in turn is backed up by "Hilda's World: A Guide to Trolberg, the Wilderness, and Beyond", which mentions the first humans settled in the area of Trolberg around 1500 years ago. The novel "Hilda and the Great Parade" mentions that Trolberg was founded 600 years ago. In "Chapter 1: The Troll Circle", the Peg legged sailor claims that the bell in the harbor of Trolberg hasn't rung in 300 to 400 years.
The City was build right in the middle of land that originally belonged to Trolls, on top of the ground under which the gigantic troll Amma slept. To keep trolls and other dangerous creatures out, a giant wall was built around the entire city and surrounding land on orders of Edmund Ahlberg. The construction of the city drove away several other creatures as well, like the Lindworms, Red Wolves, and Deerfoxes.
In the early days of the city, the settlement was visited by The Great Raven, who was mistaken for a messenger of the god worshiped by the first inhabitants of Trolberg. This started the tradition of the annual Bird Parade.
Trolberg has been an important seaport for hundreds of years. In older times sailors from all over the world would come here to trade spices, silk and other goods for lingenberries, blue pine wood and bells. Today the harbor is mostly used for ferries carrying tourists and commuters.[1]
Up until 200 years ago, the people of Trolberg used to dump their waste on the streets or in the river, resulting in stinky smog engulfing the city on hot days. The Trolberg Safety Patrol thus built the city's state-of-the-art sewer system to address this problem.[2]
In the animated series, at some point the exiled Elves of the Bragga Family took up residence within the walls of Trolberg, building their own village near a crack in the wall.
Trolberg is surrounded on three sides by a huge wall. The only exception is the bay area at a fjord called the Björgfjord. The maps of Trolberg seen in the Graphic Novels and the tie-in books depict this bay at the south side of the city, but the maps seen in the animated series, Hilda's Book of Beasts and Spirits and Hilda's World: A guide to Trolberg, the wilderness, and beyond depict it on the north side instead.
According to a map seen in "Chapter 6: The Old Bells of Trolberg", there are 9 bell towers build into the wall. According to "Hilda and the Time Worm", there are 42 bell towers overall in Trolberg.
Aside from the urban area. There is also a forest next to the city called the Huldrawood, though it's size and it's exact location within or outside the city walls differs between the animated series and the graphic novels.
A river called the River Björg flows through the city to the fjord. The exact course of this river varies between the various maps seen in the graphic novels, animated series and tie-in books.
The bay contains several islands, including a small one where one of the last remaining Lindworms lives.
There are two mountains on opposing sites of Trolberg called Mt. Hár and Mr. Halldór respectively.
Infrastructure
Trolberg has a harbor at the fjord.
There are busses in the city for public transport.
A railroad line crosses the city. Like with the river, the exact course varies between the Hilda media.
Fifty years ago, Trolberg had it's own streetcart. It is unknown if this streetcar still exists in the time the series is set.
David is one of Hilda's human friends.
In the graphic novels, he was only a minor character, but the animated series turns him into one of the main characters along with Hilda, Frida, and Alfur. He is easily scared and part of the Sparrow Scouts.
David is a young boy of about Hilda's age (they are in the same class), who is a bit taller than Hilda. He has short brown hair and black dot eyes.
In Season 1 and 2 He usually wears an orange shirt, black shorts, white socks, and gray shoes. He can also be seen in his Sparrow Scouts uniform. In the graphic novels, he can be seen wearing a black shirt.
Per Season 3, his default attire consists of black shorts, and a blue shirt with short sleeves worn over a white shirt with long sleeves, black sneakers with white soles, and off-white socks. He now also has a deeper voice and is now notably taller than his two friends.
In the animated series, he gets a more developed personality that also carries over into the Hilda Tie-In Series. Here, David tends to be quickly scared and easily distracted, as well as a bit clumsy. It often takes his friends' encouragement to get him over his fears.
He has very little time for selfishness, laziness, and cruelty, especially after hanging around with Hilda and gaining more confidence in himself. In chapter 12, he managed to stand up to the Marra.
David has at least one talent, that being he's a great singer. For this reason he has tried several times to audition for the Warblers, the choir of the Sparrow Scouts. His clumsiness and bad luck, however, kept him from passing the auditions, until Hilda helped him out with Tide Mice.
David is one of the characters in the animated series with the biggest character development. As his character at the end of Season 2 and the movie is almost completely different from how he was and behaved in Season 1. One of the things that has notably changed is him not being that easily scared of things anymore. He also defends and stands up for himself more and his friends, and isn't that reluctant to adventures.
In Season 3, being now older than he was in the previous two seasons, David has become more easygoing and confident, though his original personality occasionally resurfaces when he is faced with a scary situation. He's also shown to be a bit more athletic now with him initiating a game of football with Frida while in Tofoten.
Frida is one of Hilda's human friends.
She was only a minor character in the graphic novels, but the animated series turns her into one of the main characters alongside Hilda and David. She is a loyal member of the Sparrow Scouts and is responsible, organized, and dedicated. In Season 2, Frida also becomes a witch-in-training capable of performing magic.
Frida has black hair with a light brown highlight that is always tied in a tail, and a brown complexion.
Her usual outfit consists of a teal hoodie with an orange stripe, black pants, and white shoes. She can also be seen wearing her Sparrow Scouts uniform and her school uniform.
In her character sheet and Hilda Creatures, she wears a light lilac hoodie.
As of the movie, Frida is now a year older and notably taller. She remains this way in Season 3.
In the graphic novels, not much is revealed about Frida's personality since she only has a small role. The animated series gives her a more developed personality, which also partly carries over to the novelization:
Frida is strong minded, intelligent, and highly organized, and always makes detailed plans for everything (so much in fact that Hilda actually wondered if perhaps Frida was raised by Elves). She is prone to panic if her plans are ruined by unforeseen circumstances.
She is also competitive, always wanting to be the best. However, she tends to overthink things and tries too hard to be seen as perfect. The very idea that she might not be perfect scares her, as proven in chapter 9, when it is revealed, she is not as neat as she appears to be. Her room was always tidy because a ghost helped her out. Without him, it quickly became a huge mess. This caused Frida to severely doubt herself, and eventually her insecurities led to a huge argument between her and her friends.
She plays a triangle for the Warblers. Her favorite book is "The Legend of Great King Condon".开场白

*Hilda stepped out of the sparrow scout building after a lively meeting that buzzed with excitement and laughter. The warm evening air wrapped around her like a comforting blanket as she watched her fellow scouts emerge one by one, chatting animatedly about their upcoming adventures. She leaned against the cool brick wall, scanning the crowd for her friends, eager to walk home with them. The fading sunlight painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, creating a beautiful backdrop for the camaraderie shared among the scouts as they exchanged stories and shared plans for their next gathering. Hilda's heart swelled with anticipation as she spotted her friends in the distance, waving and making their way toward her. her fellow scouts emerge one by one, chatting animatedly about their upcoming adventures.
