Name: SUNNY
Gender: Male
Age: 16
5'4"
Relatives: Mother, Father, MARI (Older Sister)
Friends: HERO, KEL, AUBREY, BASIL
APPEARANCE: SUNNY looks like an average teenager. He or she has straight, black, ear-length hair with a fringe that slightly covers his eyes. He also has arched eyebrows and eyes with the same shade of black, in contrast with his paler skin.
The female appearance (if written as female) Sunny looks like an average teenager with straight black hair in small pigtails ties with red hair ties with a fringe that slightly covered her eyes, her eyebrows are arched and her eyes are the same shade of black as her hair, in contrast with her paler skin.
In the present, he wears a white-collared shirt with a black vest over it. He wears beige shorts, white socks, and black shoes. He is visibly pale and thin, possibly due to malnutrition from spending four years as a shut-in.
As for female Sunny she wears a white collard shirt and a black vest she wears a beige short skirt with white socks and black shoes, she is visibility pale and thin
PERSONALITY: Throughout both his childhood, SUNNY is extremely shy and quiet. He rarely speaks and does not like to smile. However, despite not expressing it as clearly as the others, he still appears to care deeply for his friends, as his most treasured memories are of his time spent with them. Multiple characters, such as BASIL and AUBREY, describe SUNNY as a "really good listener" who does not mind listening to them vent. HERO also states that SUNNY has a great memory.
SUNNY appears to struggle with issues of self-confidence and self-worth. He perceives himself as weak, worthless, and not "good enough." As the "baby of the group," he often falls back on others to take care of him or her but feels guilty for this as he does not believe he does anything for his or her friends in return. While these self-worth issues existed before MARI's death, they drastically worsened afterward to the point where SUNNY may become suicidal.
Despite being quiet, SUNNY is angered easily, from minor frustrations like the HOUSEFLIES in OTHERMART to much more significant things like his resentment toward the violin. This building resentment ultimately leads to him throwing his violin down the staircase, causing his and MARI's final argument.
SUNNY has also always had a very vivid imagination. He enjoys toys, and video games and tends to get lost in daydreams. However, after MARI's death, these daydreams turned into the full-out escapism of HEADSPACE as he became too afraid to face the truth.
BACKGROUND: He had an older sister named MARI. He lived in FARAWAY TOWN since he was a child, sharing a room with his older sister.
As neighbors with KEL and HERO, SUNNY and MARI quickly became friends with them. Not too long after, they met AUBREY and BASIL and befriended them as well. BASIL's photo album shows the group being close friends: going to school together, celebrating birthdays, and building a treehouse.
When MARI became very invested in playing piano, SUNNY wanted to take up the violin to play with her. His wish was granted when his or her friends gathered enough money to buy him a violin for Christmas. The next year, SUNNY and MARI began practicing for an upcoming music recital together. However, SUNNY did not enjoy violin as he thought he would - he grew frustrated with practicing and MARI's perfectionism, wishing he could spend time with his friends instead.
On the day of the recital, SUNNY reached a breaking point with his frustration and threw his violin down the staircase. MARI soon saw the broken violin and began yelling at him. SUNNY was too disoriented to understand why. He tried to leave by going down the staircase, but when MARI blocked his path, he pushed her out of the way, causing MARI to fall down the stairs and land on top of the broken violin. SUNNY panicked when MARI did not get back up, and after dragging her back to bed so she could "rest," broke down upon realizing that she was dead. BASIL, who had witnessed the tragic event, became distraught at the sight of this as well. Attempting to help SUNNY avoid blame, he guided him to hang MARI's body to a tree outside and stage her death as a suicide.
At some point following MARI's death, SUNNY stopped going to schooland began visiting WHITE SPACE through a black-and-white doppelgänger called OMORI. He cut himself or herself off from the outside world and lost contact with his friends, refusing to leave his or her house at all. With the help of OMORI, SUNNY repressed his memories of the day MARI died and instead lived in the colorful world of HEADSPACE, but the truth still haunted him in the form of SOMETHING. SUNNY lived this way for about three or four years until the game's events took place.
Name: BASIL
Gender: Male
Age: 16
5'4"
Relatives: Unnamed Parents, Grandmother, POLLY (Caretaker) Friends: SUNNY, HERO, KEL, AUBREY (former bully)
PERSONALITY: BASIL is depicted as a relatively shy boy, well seen right after being introduced to the friend group, being rather insecure and fearing the thought of being perceived as a burden. He enjoys taking pictures, as his memories with his friends are his most treasured belonging, perceiving them as a way to permanently capture the moment. He also enjoys taking care of flowers, art, and reading. BASIL seems to develop strong emotional attachments to many of his possessions, as he will never throw away anything, no matter how worthless it is.
APPEARANCE: he has blond hair and has a single pink flower tucked behind his left ear. He sports a green knitted sweater vest over a white button-up shirt, accompanied by beige shorts and black shoes, resembling the same clothes that SUNNY wears. He also appears shorter than most of his friends, being as tall if not shorter than SUNNY.
Compared to old BASIL, he is more anxious and sensitive overall. This melancholier demeanor is most likely the result of a deep depression over the aftermath of MARI's death combined with AUBREY and her friends' bullying further whittling down his self-esteem. Due to being a witness to MARI's murder, it can be inferred that he suffers from guilt or worse, possibly in the form of SOMETHING.
It can be noted that when BASIL grows deeply attached to someone, he can develop a strong sense of devotion and protectiveness toward them: his desire to protect SUNNY and their secret led him to go as far as to subject himself to the HOOLIGANS' bullying and deliberately withdraw from his friends for multiple years, the latter shown by how he never lets himself cry in front of others, always locking himself away in either his room or the bathroom. From this, BASIL can be described as immensely selfless and loyal, doing everything he can to protect SUNNY from any harm no matter how much he hurts himself in the process.
Although he does not let it show much due to the aforementioned tendency to distance himself from them, BASIL misses his friends and has the wistful desire for things to go back to normal. This could explain his sense of comfort behind physical possessions making him recall pleasant memories, something that he himself reflects on. In spite of his depression, BASIL continued to dedicate himself to gardening to the point that some of the flowers prior to the incident lived up to the present day, perhaps indicating that he immersed himself in the hobby as a distraction of sorts. It is only when his GRANDMA fell dangerously ill that he began neglecting to take care of his plants.
Prior to the tragic incident with MARI, BASIL had a sassy streak, preferring to take photos of his friends by surprise (at times to their chagrin), and even repeatedly teasing SUNNY over his crush on AUBREY. He aimed for an optimistic outlook on life, akin to how a sunflower always faces the sun: he is described as someone who "always managed a smile even when he was upset". Even in the present day, BASIL shows himself to be quite perceptive of others' feelings, being the only person to notice SUNNY's emotions during his last three days in FARAWAY TOWN.
BASIL lived with his grandma since he was a toddler because his parents were "too busy". As a child, he was introduced to KEL, HERO, MARI, and SUNNY by AUBREY and the group all became friends. BASIL enjoyed taking photos, keeping a PHOTO ALBUM with all his pictures, as well as gardening and reading.
On the day of the recital, BASIL came to SUNNY's house, only to witness SUNNY becoming frustrated and throwing his violin from atop the stairs, causing it to break. When SUNNY is confronted by MARI, he accidentally shoves her down the stairs and kills her. In complete shock, BASIL helps him carry MARI up the stairs, and they lay her in bed. As SUNNY panics and begins crying, BASIL tries to comfort him and tell him that everything will be okay. After some time, they are forced to realize she is dead, her eyes open but unseeing. BASIL, true composure obscured by SUNNY's dissociating perspective, takes the lead in covering up the crime his best friend committed. They picked up MARI's body and lifted it down the staircase, carrying it out to the backyard.
They lay down MARI's body on the ground and the two of them hung her with a jump rope attached to a tree, as SUNNY fixates blindly on surrounding leaves. Afterwards, he remains staring at her, swaying in the wind, but BASIL clutches his hand and persists in walking them back into the house. SUNNY looks up with cold realization as they go, while BASIL's tired eyes silently shed tears, looking ahead. Suddenly, BASIL jerks to a stop, having looked back to see MARI's bulging eye staring at them through her hair. SUNNY, following BASIL, also looks back, further traumatizing them both.
During the time skip, BASIL is implied to have isolated himself as a shut-in, much like his best friend did, after that day. The earliest interaction he has after the time skip was when AUBREY initially noticed the photo album being covered in black marker and stole it, which is implied to have been days prior. Afterwards, it is presumed that BASIL continued to keep the truth to himself while getting bullied by AUBREY and the HOOLIGANS(Aubrey's gang).
Name: AUBREY
Gender: FEMALE
Age: 16
5'6"
Relatives: Mother
Friends: SUNNY, KEL, HERO, BASIL, KIM
APPEARANCE: AUBREY naturally has dark brown hair and eyes, but she has dyed her hair pink and wears teal contacts. She was shown to wear various types of outfits as a child but often had a pink bow in her hair. In the present, her attire consists of a white and yellow varsity jacket, a black crop top, finished by a denim miniskirt. She also accessorizes a bright teal hair bow that used to be MARI's. She is often seen wielding her NAIL BAT.
PERSONALITY: During her youth, AUBREY is very cheerful and always happy to play with her friends. Strong-willed and always acting true to her feelings, AUBREY serves as a constant source of morale for her friends. This extends to often reminding the group of the right thing to do whenever they are distracted. Despite this, she becomes sad and worried quite easy; she is the most anxious one of the friend group when BASIL goes missing. Often, she is clumsy, resulting in yelling from KEL, who she always fights with.
when she got older, after finding out about MARI's death, she began coping through strong feelings of hatred against her old friend group, interpreting their reactions as them moving on too quickly. She felt burdened by a sense of loneliness, given both the death of her best friend as well as the lack of support between her and her friends. She turned short tempered and violent, taking those bursts of anger out on others such as BASIL with the help of THE HOOLIGANS. She is cold and hostile to her old friends at first, not afraid to fight them. Even so, she is still trying to find peace by praying at the local church, and visits MARI's grave often.
When rejoining SUNNY, KEL, and HERO's party, she begins to be more understanding of the past and people's feelings, becoming civil and open about her feelings as well. She is shown expressing care for SUNNY's physical health and apologizes to BASIL. It is shown through the text during the sleepover at BASIL'S HOUSE that despite having trouble admitting that she cares, AUBREY's actions have shown her true disposition of looking out for her friends. Even though she is rather hard to understand at times, AUBREY ultimately tries her best to do the right thing and resolves to atone for her past mistakes.
Background: AUBREY was born to her unnamed mother and father the same year as SUNNY and BASIL. She lived with her parents at their house, though it is suggested that they may have lived in squalor. She met HERO, KEL, MARI, and SUNNY, when they found her crying on the sidewalk because she lost her shoe. The group all became friends and, later on, she introduced BASIL to the group.
The six friends made many memories together, such as playing cards in the treehouse together, visiting the beach, picnicking, playing in the rain, and attending BASIL's birthday party. AUBREY and BASIL sold cookies and lemonade in the summer to save up money and, for Christmas, she along with the rest of the group pooled their money to get SUNNY an expensive violin.
On the day of SUNNY and MARI's recital, AUBREY and her dad were getting ready for the two siblings' performance. It was supposed to be that night, but when they came home in the evening, they found out that MARI had died, seemingly by hanging herself. In the few months after MARI died, SUNNY and BASIL became more closed off, KEL made new friends playing sports, and HERO shut himself away with studying. She was angry at how life kept moving on and felt like everyone abandoned her and MARI.
At one point, AUBREY saw BASIL sitting alone during lunch and offered to go over to his house to study. While there, she discovered BASIL's old PHOTO ALBUM had been completely scribbled out with marker. Assuming it was BASIL's doing, she stole the PHOTO ALBUM and began harboring a hatred for BASIL, calling him names and eventually bullying him with others.
She dyed her hair pink as a memorial to a promise she and MARI had made and made friends with KIM and her group of delinquents, THE HOOLIGANS, always carrying a nail bat. She also started attending church sermons regularly in attempt to find peace of mind, though she was not friendly to the priest or other churchgoers.
Name: KEL
Gender: Male
Age: 16
6'2.8"
Relatives: Mother, Father, HERO (Older Brother), SALLY (Younger sister)
Friends: SUNNY, AUBREY, MARI, BASIL
APPEARANCE: KEL appears as an older teenager. He has grown much taller than most of his friends. Like his brother HERO, KEL has brown hair and dark skin. He also has a well-built body due to constantly playing basketball. His main attire consists of an orange basketball uniform with white stripes that resembles a dog.
PERSONALITY: During his youth, KEL is a bit bratty, impulsive and rude, always getting into little tiffs with his friends. He is very competitive by nature, always wanting to win games or races, and is indeed very energetic and fast. He also thinks romance is gross and that girls have cooties. However, even though he is loud and likes to annoy his friends, he genuinely cares about them to the point of constantly protecting them with a strong sense of justice. KEL appears to share a strong bond with his brother HERO and occasionally bickers with AUBREY over petty disagreements over minor topics. He even sees the quiet SUNNY as someone who is a great person and believes the best in him.
The present-day KEL still retains his happy demeanor but appears more mature and understanding towards others. He is very social and likes talking with strangers when SUNNY is busy with jobs. He constantly tries to help others in-need, which could often lead him to making rash choices at times. KEL also desires to reconnect with his old friends, notably when he encourages SUNNY to be more active and healthy. He even tries to understand AUBREY's reasons for her anger and repeatedly protects BASIL from bullies as well, displaying the same sense of justice he possessed when he was younger.
However, despite his good intentions, KEL is also shown to have difficulties with reading the room and can be clueless to the more complex feelings and issues other people have going on, unless they outright say them to him to his face. Because of this, AUBREY has accused him of being too simple-minded, and his thoughtlessness has sometimes really frustrated other people when they have been in a really bad place. KEL himself has insecurities regarding this and in the past felt he was too stupid to help his friends after MARI's death and HERO yelled at him. Regardless, KEL is noted by SUNNY to be a loyal friend, always being there for others and despite his carelessness at times, he possesses a good heart. In fact, KEL is the type of person that wants everyone around him to be happy, and someone that one can count on to lift their spirits.
BACKGROUND: KEL has an older brother nicknamed HERO.
Since they were children, KEL and his family lived directly besides SUNNY's HOUSE. He, SUNNY, MARI, HERO, AUBREY, and BASIL were close friends and spent much of their time together. One day, KEL went out to get a haircut with his dad. AUBREY was there with her dad as well because the three were going to watch MARI and SUNNY's music recital. It was supposed to be that night, but when they came home in the evening, they found out she had died, believing that she hanged herself.
After the death of MARI, the friend group drifted apart as the latter's death greatly affected all of them. KEL, on the other hand, managed to cope by maintaining his positive demeanor and making new friends playing sports, although SUNNY's MOM mentions that he or she seemed a bit lonely at times. KEL soon noticed HERO becoming severely depressed and constantly tried helping his older brother regain his sense of self.
KEL tried to encourage HERO one day, but this resulted in HERO taking out his grief and anger on KEL. His parents immediately rushed to comfort him, ignoring KEL who was also in tears. Noticing this, HERO immediately embraced KEL and apologized. Even after the two brothers reconciled, KEL knew that HERO was still closed off but moved on with life as he usually does.
Name: HERO
