Professional wrestling, often referred to as pro wrestling or simply wrestling, is a form of athletic theater centered around mock combat, with the premise that its performers are competitive wrestlers. Authentic wrestling has never been popular enough in the United States to sustain a professional scene because the action is too slow-paced. In the late 19th century, wrestlers dealt with this by quietly fixing their matches so that they could display more entertaining action, and thus they managed to draw sustainable audiences. Match fixing in sports was frowned upon then as much as it is now, so the wrestlers had to keep it a secret. Wrestling promoters scripted victories for their more charismatic wrestlers to please the fans. Since charisma mattered more than skill to a wrestler's success, wrestlers adopted personas and gimmicks to make themselves more entertaining. As promotions grew more sophisticated, they started writing dramatic stories for their wrestlers, pitting heroic "faces" against villainous "heels". Professional wrestlers were required to remain in character whenever they were in public; a policy known as kayfabe. This requirement was relaxed in the 1990s as by then the public had become too aware of the scripted nature of wrestling. Professional wrestlers perform as characters and usually maintain what is known in the industry as a gimmick—the persona, style, and traits conveyed by their distinctive attires, ring names, entrance music, and other distinguishable attributes and characteristics. Matches are the primary vehicle for advancing storylines, which typically center on feuds between heroic "faces" (also called babyfaces) and villainous "heels", although more modern wrestling has increasingly featured morally ambiguous "tweeners". A wrestling ring, akin to a boxing ring, serves as the main stage; additional scenes may be recorded for television in backstage areas of the venue, in a format similar to reality television. Performers generally integrate authentic wrestling techniques and fighting styles with choreography, stunts, improvisation, and dramatic conventions designed to maximize audience engagement. Professional wrestling is performed around the world through various promotions, which are roughly analogous to production companies or sports leagues. Promotions vary considerably in size, scope, and creative approach, ranging from local shows on the independent circuit to internationally broadcast events at major arenas. The largest and most influential promotions are in the United States, Mexico, Japan, and Europe (particularly the United Kingdom, France, and Germany/Austria), which have each developed distinct styles, traditions, and subgenres within professional wrestling Many professional wrestlers also perform as freelancers and make appearances for different promotions. Professional wrestling has developed its own culture and community, including a unique glossary of terms. It has achieved mainstream success and influence within popular culture; many wrestling phrases, tropes, and concepts are now referenced in everyday language and in film, television, music, and video games. Numerous professional wrestlers have become national or international sports icons with recognition by the wider public, with some finding further fame and success through other endeavours such as acting and music. Professional wrestlers are athletes and entertainers who perform in choreographed, scripted matches known for their blend of high-level physicality and theatrical storytelling. While the outcomes are predetermined by "bookers," the physical impact and risks are real, often requiring years of training in specialized schools. Wrestling features numerous match types, ranging from standard bouts with traditional rules to specialty "gimmick" matches with unique stipulations and victory conditions. The most common types include standard singles and tag team matches, as well as specialty matches involving objects or specific environments. Standard Match Variations - Singles Match: A basic one-on-one match where the goal is to achieve a pinfall (holding the opponent's shoulders to the mat for a referee's three-count) or submission (forcing the opponent to give up or "tap out"). Tag Team Match: Involves teams of two or more, where generally one member from each team is in the ring at a time and must tag their partner to switch places. Handicap Match: Pits one wrestler or team against a team with more participants (e.g., two vs. one). Triple Threat/Fatal 4-Way: Matches involving three or four wrestlers, respectively, where the first person to score a pinfall or submission wins the match, often with no disqualifications or count-outs. Specialty and Gimmick Matches - These matches introduce unique rules, environments, or weapons: Steel Cage Match: The ring is enclosed in a metal cage, with victory typically achieved by pinfall, submission, or by escaping the cage over the top or through the door. Ladder Match: A prize (like a championship belt or contract) is hung above the ring, and the only way to win is by climbing a ladder to retrieve it. Tables, Ladders, and Chairs (TLC) Match: An escalation of the ladder match where tables, ladders, and chairs are all legal and encouraged weapons. No Disqualification/Extreme Rules Match/Street Fight: No rules apply, allowing for the use of weapons and outside interference without risk of disqualification. Victory is typically still by pinfall or submission. Last Man Standing Match: The only way to win is to incapacitate an opponent so they cannot get back to their feet before a referee counts to ten. "I Quit" Match: A submission match where the opponent must verbally say "I quit" into a microphone to end the match. Hell in a Cell/Elimination Chamber: Matches that take place within large, enclosed steel structures, each with specific entry and elimination rules. Royal Rumble/Battle Royal: Large multi-person matches where the goal is to eliminate opponents by throwing them over the top rope until only one person remains. In professional wrestling, a championship or title is a recognition promoted by professional wrestling organizations. Championship reigns are determined by professional wrestling matches, in which competitors are involved in predetermined rivalries; these narratives create feuds between the various competitors, which usually cast them as either faces (heroes), heels (villains), or more rarely tweeners (morally ambiguous). The bookers in a company, who decide the winners and where the storyline goes, will place the title on the most accomplished performer or the one they believe will generate fan interest in terms of event attendance and television viewership. Professional wrestling championships are classified into several types, often designating a hierarchy within a promotion. These classifications include world, regional, weight class, gender, tag team, and gimmick/style championships.
